Gary Namie, PhD

Dr. Gary Namie (PhD, Social Psychology, University of California, Santa Barbara) is widely regarded as North America's foremost authority on Workplace Bullying, the phenomenon of abusive work environments - their etiology, their impact on people and organizations, their toxicity for affected industries.

His focus on Workplace Bullying began in 1997 after an abusive woman boss had injured his wife, Dr. Ruth Namie. He now directs the sole U.S. nonprofit research and education organization that focuses on bullying at work, the Workplace Bullying Institute (WBI) now based in Bellingham, Washington.

In September 2007, Dr. Namie wrote, and Zogby International pollsters conducted, the largest-ever, scientific U.S. survey of Workplace Bullying.

Gary directs a national network of volunteer citizen advocates to encourage state legislatures to introduce the anti-bullying 'Healthy Workplace Bill.' To date the WBI-Legislative Campaign has encouraged 14 states to introduce this landmark legislation.

He serves as expert witness in bullying-related legal cases and was the expert in the Indiana "bullying trial" (Doescher v. Raess) involving a chief perfusionist and cardiovascular surgeon.

He has extensive experience as an instructor and professor in college departments of management and psychology including the University of Southern California, Scripps College, and other colleges. He won national American Psychological Association and UCSB campus teaching awards. At Western Washington University, he developed and taught the first university course on bullying at work.

For Kaiser Permanente, Hawaii he started the Management Development department in charge of all non-clinical training and education for physicians and staff. In California for a now-defunct multi-facility hospital corporation, he established and directed an internal consulting team of Organization Development experts to tackle predictable workplace climate issues and organizational behavior crises.
